Product Details
Material : White Porcelain
Designation : National Treasure No.219
Size : (S)H.30
This masterpiece of blue and white porcelain ware has the full shoulders and voluminous body typical of the early Chosun period. The entire surface is ornately decorated in a clear blue pigment, with the area around the neck filled with alternating flowers and concentric circles, followed by a band of lotus petals encircling the shoulder as well as the base.
A rather crowded plum and bamboo motif is elaborately painted on the body, their realistic and pictorial effect reminiscent of literati painting. The dark blue of the plum provides a lively contrast against the light blue of the bamboo and the entire surface is covered in a grayish-white glaze of bluish tint.
The reddish-brown buff of the body beneath is revealed in areas where the glaze and blue pigment have run down.
The base is indented and has four wide sand spur-marks. While the technique of producing blue and white porcelain was introduced from China during the end of the Yuan and early Ming dynasties, this jar is indicative of the progress that the Chosun potter achieved in incorporating a distinctly Korean aesthetic sensibility to that of its Chinese counterpart.
