This vase is a most impressive witness to the refined Koryo aesthetic which is clearly distinct from the more austere sensibility of Chinese Song ceramics.
It is in the typical 12th century maebyong style, full and dignified in form and pure and lustrous in glaze tone.

Four groups of pearl motifs are delicately rendered around the shoulders, with four lotus tendrils in slightly varying designs on the body, and a layered lotus band and frets along the foot.

A pale-green celadon glaze is applied thinly and crackle appears in places. The glazed base, which has a shallow recess and sand spur marks, also contains an inscription of two Chinese characters.

The meaning of the characters is yet to be ascertained, but a pottery shard with an identical inscription has been found at a kiln site in Yuch'on-ri, Puan, North Cholla Province.
