About Giorgio Maiocchi
a half-Thai half-Italian actor plays Nong in The Iron Ladies a well-built katoey who likes to act dainty.
He had a long talk with his girlfriend when he was offered the part. "My girlfriend said I should think very hard about it. So, I said no at first. Then, she told me she didn't mean for me to say "no". She just wanted me to give it careful consideration. I believe I did.
So finally I said 'yes'," said Mr Giorgio.
Though It was his film debut, Mr Giorgio said he had no difficulty portraying Nong. Nong spends a lot of time dressing up and believes that every man is interested in him. Giorgio studied for the role by watching movies like ?o Wong Foo? ?hanks For Everything?and also spent time talking to the real katoey on whom his character is based.
The efforts seemed to have paid off.
During the filmmaking, a group of soldiers, who didn? know that he was not actually gay made jokes about him during the shooting. "And I reacted as if I was a gay. Actually, I was glad that they thought I was gay, because if they believed it, the audience will, too."
Although the character of Nong is more open about his sexuality, Giorgio fought the temptation to overplay the role. "Because it is based on true story I had to be careful not to exaggerate my actions," he says. Giorgio, who has been looking for a plum role like this for the last seven years, thinks that playing his character has also helped him to have a
better understanding of the gay lifestyle.
"My part is all comedy, with very little drama. I just have to put on the effeminate gait. Because of the physical contradiction, my being a big guy and wearing flashy make-up, it was already quite funny. I had to control myself not to overact, though "
His one of the toughest challenges of the movie was dealing with his body hair. About what he says, "It was so painful! I had to have my legs and underarms waxed almost every other day. Although it was quite comfortable afterwards, I have no wish to do it again!"
